An introduction to bearings (January 3, 2005) Bearings provide either a sliding or rolling contact whenever relative motion exists between parts of a machine. These reduce friction and thus heat generation, thereby longer life for rotating machine elements. There are mainly two different types, plain bearings and anti-friction bearings.
